Consumer Survey to Men on Aesthetic Medicine in Japan: Key Research Findings 2024

“Location”, “Clear Pricing System”, and “High Reputation/ High Experience (Number of Treatment Cases)” Ranked Top 3 as What Men Seek When Selecting Aesthetic Clinic

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a consumer survey on aesthetic medicine to men in their 20s to 50s and analyzed the demand for aesthetic treatments. This press release discloses a part of the consumer survey results. Note that all questions allowed multiple responses.

Summary of Research Findings

In the consumer survey to 400 men in their 20s to 50s nationwide, we asked which facial medical aesthetic treatments they are interested in. As a result, “removal of age spot, nevus, or mole” came at the top, followed by “removal of beards and mustaches” and “removal of acne and acne scars”. For aesthetic body treatments, the most popular were “epilation” and “liposuction”, although the second most chosen answer was “not interested in any”.

Out of 400 survey respondents, 200 were the men who have experienced medical aesthetic treatments. When we asked these 200 about the reason(s) for choosing the clinic, the top three reasons were “location”, “clear pricing system”, and “high reputation / high experience (number of treatment cases)”. The top three facial treatments that these respondents experienced were “removal of beards and mustaches”, “removal of age spot, nevus, or mole”, and “removal of acnes and acne scars” (in descending order). The body treatment experienced the most were “epilation” and “liposuction”, although the majority said they have not experienced any of the body treatments.

Needs of Potential Segment: Men Who Are Interested But Have Not Experienced Medical Aesthetic Procedures

The survey result revealed that the top three reasons that hinder potential segment from aesthetic medicine were “cost (too expensive)”, “safety concerns”, and “fear”.  They also indicated that, if they were to get treated, what they will look for in an aesthetic clinic would be “clear pricing system”, “high reputation / high experience (number of treatment cases)”, and “affordable price”. These three were the top three answers.
Meanwhile, the majority of potential segment were somewhat willing to get the following eight types of treatments, given that less than 50 percent of them clearly indicated decline to get these treatments: “Removal of beards and mustaches”, “epilation (body)”, “removal of age spot, nevus, or mole on face”, “getting rid of acne and/or removing acne scars”, “facial skin beautification”, “face lift”, “body skin beautification”, and “dermal fillers”. Despite some concerns, we can assume that men interested in getting aesthetic procedures are likely to get started with these types of treatments.
