Technologies for Long-Term Care Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2024
Driven by Shortage of Caregivers and Government Support, Long-Term Care Technology, Especially Monitoring Device for the Elderly, Expected to Proliferate
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has studied the domestic technologies for long-term care market and found out the trend by service segment, trend of market players and future prospects.
Market Overview
Robots are defined as intelligent mechanical systems equipped with the three elementary technologies of sensors (to perceive information), intelligence/control unit (to make decisions), and actuation (to perform actions). Long-term care robots utilize these robotic technologies to help the users (the elderly) who need assistance or to reduce the burden on caregivers. They are broadly categorized into the following three types according to their role, i.e., “caregiver support”, “user independence support”, and “communication/security”. They are mainly introduced in long-term care facilities to meet the needs of transfer assistance, walking assistance, toileting management, monitoring, bathing assistance, communication, etc.
Noteworthy Topics
Adoption of Long-Term Care Robots
According to the “Studies on the Onsite Use of Care Technologies for Long-Term Care” by Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the largest share in the use of long-term care robots is “monitoring devices (institutional) accounting for 34.2%, the most accepted, followed by bathing assistance equipment (institutional) accounting for 11.9%, and caregiver operational support system/equipment (institutional) accounting for 11.7%.
Future Outlook
The aging of population and the shortage of caregivers are expected to continue to drive the adoption of care technologies, especially in long-term care facilities. In particular, monitoring devices are projected to be implemented furthermore in many long-term care facilities due to additional remuneration for long-term care services and deregulation of night staffing.
