The global polarizer market size by production volume at manufacturers for 2023 was estimated at 564.45 million square meters, 114.2% of that of previous year. While the global polarizer market for 2023 maintained the steady, double-digit growth and a recovery in demand until the third quarter (July to September), production adjustment for TV displays that started in October reduced the shipment volume of polarizers in the fourth quarter (October to December). Still, the entire market throughout 2023 was an enormous recovery.
Such recovery of the polarizer market was driven by increased production of TV displays with the size 65 inches or bigger. Expanded production occurred not only at Chinese manufacturers but also at Taiwanese as well as Japanese TV display manufacturers. This favorably impacted the manufacturers of large-screen TV polarizers, as their production recovered to full capacity in the third quarter (July to September) of 2023.

In 2022 when large TV sets showed sluggish sales, well-selling products at TV display manufacturers were small, 32-inch or 43-inch-level TV screens that sold stably in developing countries.
Later, when demand for middle-to-low-end TVs has overall satisfied, the mainstay production shifted to high-end TVs with at least 55 inches. 65-inch TVs became the premium market segment for TV display manufacturers.
Added with best-selling 65-inch displays, 2024 has seen expansion in the production of super-large TV displays with the sizes 75 inches or 85 inches. Increasing production of larger TV screen sizes is also another factor that supports the global polarizer market geared to TV displays.

Future Outlook

Driven by polarizers for big TV screens that have large area effects, the global polarizer market for 2024 expects an expansion to 595.8 million square meters.  

Despite decrease in the shipment volume of TV polarizers at manufacturers since the fourth quarter (October to December) of 2023, the operation rate of polarizer production has revived because of increasing demand for restocking of TV screens at TV display manufacturers in around February 2024. Since the latter half of Spring Festival holidays, Chinese TV display manufacturers centered on CSOT and BOE have rapidly raised their operation rates to 90% or more for producing TV displays by the end of February, together with increase in the operation rates at Taiwanese and Japanese TV display manufacturers, expanding the production volume.
As a result, full-scale operation of production lines both at polarizer manufacturers and TV display manufacturers is continuing hopefully until the end of May 2024.
However, when considering the demand trends, the level of inventory of TV screens at TV display manufacturers, and earlier orders as well as double-book of TV screens by TV set manufacturers, production operation rates at polarizer manufacturers and display manufacturers are likely to decline from the latter half of 2024 (July to December).
