Market Overview

The estimated domestic shoes and footwear retail market for FY2021 generated 1,096.7 billion yen by retail amount, 102.6% on a YoY basis. The market had been on the decline since FY2016, and was seriously affected by the coronavirus pandemic in FY2020 in which the market size diminished by 20%. The market upturned in FY2021 and slightly expanded from the significant shrinkage in the previous year, but recovery to the size of FY2019 was far from it. Although activity restrictions stemming from the pandemic were lifted, having increased the opportunities to go outside, new lifestyles in the pandemic have been established and have seemingly suppressed the demand recovery for shoes and footwear.

Noteworthy Topics

Key is Enhancement in Ecommerce Channel and Online Measures in Shrinking Market

The market has generated fierce competition to acquire the share involving new market players from different industries in addition to existing rivalries. While each market player has hammered out various measures, those that stood out were enhancement of ecommerce channel and OMO (Online merges with Offline).

According to the “Results of FY2021 E-Commerce Market Survey Compiled (announced in August 2022)” by METI, clothing and accessories (including sporting gear) sold via B2C and ecommerce increased stably to 2,427.9 billion yen (109.35% on YoY) in 2021. The ratio of ecommerce has also risen by 1.71 points to 21.15%. With rapid expansion of B2C and ecommerce triggered by the coronavirus pandemic, use of them in the fashion field has increased year by year, indicating that enhancement of ecommerce channel and online measures likely the indispensable factors for future survival in the market.

Future Outlook

The domestic shoes and footwear retail market for FY2022 is projected to generate 1,113.4 billion yen by retail amount, 101.5% on a YoY basis. Even after FY2022, substantial recovery cannot be expected from various reasons such as the continuous influence of the pandemic, new lifestyles having established from it, and price rise in products associated with soaring prices of raw materials, which is projected to make the market size to stay flat or to increase only slightly.
