The Business-Use Cleaning Robot Market: Key Research Findings 2021

The Business-Use Cleaning Robot Market to Turn toward Expansion; Increase of Demand for the Floor Sweeping Robots Expected due to Functions and Performances Offered by the New Products Introduced to the Market, Including the Increased Work Efficiency and Consequent Reduction in Labor Costs, and the Improved Adaptability to Different Work Environments

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic business-use cleaning robot market and has found out the trends by use and purpose, trends of market players, and future perspective.

Transition and Forecast of Business-Use Cleaning Robot Market
Transition and Forecast of Business-Use Cleaning Robot Market

Market Overview

The size of the business-use cleaning robot market in FY2020 is estimated to be 3,226 million yen (up 63.1% from the previous fiscal year) based on the shipment value of manufacturers. As to the ratio by application and purpose, floor sweeping (dust removal) robots account for a high percentage of the market, and floor washing robots are also expanding and gaining presence every year. For the time being, however, floor sweeping robots, new products of which have been released one after another, will be the mainstay of the market, driving the increase of the overall market size.

Although there are still many entrants in the business-use cleaning robot market, and the number of entrants for the category of robots for floor sweeping and floor cleaning has tended to increase since the last survey in 2018, the number of entrants for the category of robots for other applications and purposes has been small and even declining in some cases.

Noteworthy Topics

Potential for New Demand Creation

Existing demand for business-use robots for floor sweeping and floor cleaning, etc. depends on major building maintenance business operators, and the speed of demand expansion is slow if the market stick to only current sales channels. In order to increase the demand, it is effective to develop new demand from outside of the current major channels, and in particular, an increase of adoption can be expected from local and mid-size building maintenance business operators.

On the other hand, some companies that were active in creating new demand for business-use cleaning robots for other applications and purposes have withdrawn from the market, and unfortunately, new demand cannot be expected much currently.

Future Outlook

With floor sweeping robots leading the market, the business-use cleaning robot market is expected to continue to grow, reaching as high as 10,000 million yen in FY2024.

In particular, new products introduced in and after FY2021 are equipped with functions and performances that have never been seen before, such as automatic recharging, water supply and drainage functions, parallel movement, and increased adaptability to large spaces, and are also expected to further improve work efficiency, reduce labor costs, and increase adaptability to different work environments. Therefore, demand for floor sweeping robots may expand rapidly, depending on the evaluation by robot user companies.

On the other hand, there are no promising prospects for business-use cleaning robots for other applications and purposes, and the markets for such products are not anticipated to expand in the foreseeable future.

Research Outline

1.Research Period: December 2021 to March 2022
2.Research Object: Domestic manufacturers, distributers, R&D companies of business-use cleaning robots, and the concerned government agencies and organizations
3.Research Methogology: Face-to-face interviews by the expert researchers (including online interviews) and literature research

What are Business-Use Cleaning Robots?

Business-use cleaning robots in this research indicate those robots that have business-use and business-purpose cleaning functions such as floor sweeping (dust removal), washing, wiping, etc., not to be used for households.

They are also defined to have sensing, self-controlling, and driving (cruising) functions, but they do not have to be equipped with all of such functions, if they are able to substitute for human work at cruel working environments.  This research limits to those robots directly sold as products and exclude those in-house cleaners within a company.
