Market Overview

In 2018, the self-managed healthcare and fitness equipment market (as a sum of home management equipment, health recovery equipment, and health treatment equipment) attained 214,300 million yen based on the shipment value at manufacturers, 101.3% of the previous year.
With aging of society and rise in health consciousness, home management equipment, health recovery equipment, and health treatment equipment are all showing stable growth.

Noteworthy Topics

Launch of New Vital Sensing Methods

In the self-managed healthcare market, new methods has been researched and developed for vital sensing (measurement of the biological information such as pulses, blood pressure, and body temperature).
For instance, non-contact technology for taking pulses and blood pressure by analyzing a video recorded on a camera, or by radiating LED light on vessels under the skin has been developed.
Moreover, the R&D has been done on engineering for obtaining deep body temperature (temperature of internal body such as organs) which is more accurate than the skin surface temperature; for example, there is a way to measure intestinal temperature by swallowing a device at the size of a pill, and calculating deep body temperature on algorithm based on the monitored heat flux (a flow of energy per unit of area per unit of time).
Particularly, the functions to take pulses and blood pressure by beaming LED light and figuring out the core body temperature from heat flux can be embedded in the wearable devices. If the vital sensing by wearable devices becomes available, it will be simpler than monitoring by dedicated instrument. As these methodologies evolve, the health management equipment may diversify hereafter.

Future Outlook

The self-managed healthcare and fitness equipment market (as a sum of home management equipment, health recovery equipment, and health treatment equipment) is forecasted to reach 219,000 million yen by 2021, based on the shipment value at manufacturers. In a rapidly aging society, it is assumed that people’s interest and consciousness toward health remains high; therefore, the self-managed healthcare and fitness equipment market is projected to make stable growth from 2019 on.
