Global Small Motors Market: Key Research Findings 2020

Global Shipment Volume of Small Motors in 2020 Expected to Decline to 93.7% of Previous Year, 6,232,190 Thousand Units, Due to COVID-19 Pandemics Reducing Production in Overall Industries

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a survey on the global small motors market and found out the trends of products by segment, the trends of market players, and the future perspectives.

Transition and Forecast of Global Small Motor Market Size

Market Overview

The global small motors market in 2020, except for automotive ones, is expected to attain 6,232,190 thousand units, 93.7% of the size of the previous year, based on the shipment volume at manufacturers. Although demand for motors especially for personal computers, telecommunication devices, and medical equipment is on the rise in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sluggish global economy has reduced the production in overall industries, diminishing the small-motor market.

When observing the market by application, demand for motors for home electric appliances/residential facilities and industrial machinery has most affected by the pandemic, with the former affected by the decreasing consumption stemming from decreasing consumer income and the latter by decreasing or belated capital investment at overall industries.

Noteworthy Topics

Promotions of New Applications for Modular Products including Peripheral Parts in Progress

Other than conventional applications, Japanese manufacturers dealing in small motors are considering focusing on new applications such as vehicles, industrial machinery, and medical equipment which are on the rise.

What motors are required to be embedded are to achieve the motion performance just as the customer imagined, and to attain the motion performance appropriate to generate added values of applications. In order to induce such benefits, it may be effective to promote a unit (or packaged) product which includes not just one type of motors, but multiple types of motors as well as peripheral parts.

Some motors seem to have already attempted such promotions, but as the competition is expected to become fiercer with participation of overseas motor manufacturers, it is significant to manufacture something more advanced for surviving the global market.

Future Outlook

The shipment volume of small motors is projected to recover gradually from 2021. The global small motor market size based on the shipment volume at manufacturers is expected to attain 6,509,000 thousand units by 2022. Those motors with the delayed recovery of demand, such as DC brush motors (coreless) and AC induction motors are likely to be on the decline, but all other motors are expected to improve the decreasing rates in a gradual manner.

Research Outline

1.Research Period: May to August 2020
2.Research Object: Enterprises in the business of motors (small motors and industrial motors)
3.Research Methogology: Face-to-face interviews by the expert researchers and literature research

What is the Global Small Motors Market?

The small motors in this research refer to the following types of motors: DC (direct current) brush motors (cored, coreless) with the power output 1kW or less, brushless DC motors, vibration motors, PM (permanent magnet) stepper motors, HB (hybrid) stepper motors, DC axial fans and AC induction motors. The market size is calculated based on the shipment volume at manufacturers in and out of Japan.
In-vehicle motors are not included in the market size, but those small motors for in-vehicle audio visual devices are included.
