Hospital Equipment and Supplies Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2022
Domestic Hospital Equipment and Supplies Market for FY2021 Rose by 5.7% on YoY to 183,963.9 Million Yen
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a survey on the domestic hospital equipment and supplies market, and found out the market size transition and forecast, the trends by product type and by function, and the influences affected by new product releases.
This research is about major hospital equipment and supplies used as HIS (Hospital Information Systems,) and those used at CSSD (central sterile services department,) operational rooms (surgical lights, headlight systems, operating tables, ceiling pendant light, perioperative hand hygiene etc.,), and other equipment and devices (drug dividing and packaging machines, drug package printing systems, stretchers, automatic re-visitor reception machines, and automatic payment machines), not including those instruments directly used for diagnosis and medical treatments. As a total of 27 items of 14 categories, the market size of hospital equipment for FY2021 is estimated to 183,963.9 million yen, up 5.7% from the previous fiscal year.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to postponement of construction and delays of putting capital projects on hold, while the number of surgeries, which contributes the most to hospital revenue, fell by 10 to 15%. As a result, overall capital investment declined in FY2020, including those for hospital equipment. Nevertheless, the market of medical equipment like desktop autoclave and sterilizers grew during the pandemic, because the COVID-19 government subsidies and funding for improving nosocomial infection control created the special demand. Furthermore, the market turned to a positive growth in FY2021 as the postponed construction projects and investments resumed. Meanwhile, unexpected replacement demand had been generated for washer disinfectors, the automated cleaners for medical use, as existing machines were recalled due to malfunction.
Desktop Autoclave Market Trends
Due to its ease of handling and relatively inexpensive prices, small-to-midsize desktop high-pressure sterilizes (autoclaves) are widely adopted from large hospitals to general clinics. Since sterilization itself is essential to the medical process, the demand is high, and sales volume is the highest in the sterilizer market.
However, because the revised Pharmaceutical Affairs Law classified the small size autoclave as controlled medical device, they are now required to meet JIS standard and must be certified by registered certification body. Moreover, compliance with GMP Ministerial Ordinance (Ministerial Ordinance on Standards for Manufacturing Control and Quality Control of Pharmaceuticals and Quasi-Drugs) and EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) also became mandatory. The changes have complicated development of products at manufacturers, both in terms of development schedule and development cost.
Sales volume has been on a shrinkage in recent years, due to the slowdown in the number of newly opened clinics and dental clinics, and the prolongation of replacement interval due to improved performance of equipment. Government subsidies for reinforcing infection prevention measures at medical institutions and pharmacies has boosted the demand for desktop autoclaves rapidly at clinics, and the sales volume increased to 11,410 units in FY2020 (up 28.5% compared to the previous fiscal year) onto 11,440 units in FY2021 (up 0.3%). Nonetheless, the sales volume is forecasted to decrease by 34.7% to 7,470 units in FY2022 as repercussions to the demand surge in preceding years.
The "Dissemination of Nosocomial Infection Control Measures in Dental Care Institutions" issues by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare in September 2017 have notified dentists to be responsible for preventing nosocomial infection through their dental practices, such as by changing handpieces (cutting instruments for dental treatment) for each patient and by introducing devices like high-pressure steam sterilizers.
While the sales volume of desktop autoclave grows in general in tandem with the increase in awareness for infection prevention, Class B autoclave, the high-quality steam sterilizer equipped with a vacuum pump that alternatingly removes air from the chamber and sterilizes in steam, is gathering attention of dental clinics that perform high-quality sterilization.
