Language Business Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2022
Language Business in FY2021 Rose by 1.2% on Y-o-Y to 780.0 Billion Yen
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) performed a survey on the domestic language learning business, and found out the trends of market players, market trend by category and future perspectives.
The language business market size (total major 14 categories) in FY2021 generated 782.0 billion yen, a rise by 1.2% on a YoY basis, based on the sales at businesses.
This upturn was because of recovery from significant shrinkage of “Peripheral Business” market that comprises the categories of language exams, overseas-education arrangement, and interpretation/translation business in the previous fiscal year.
This market continued being affected by coronavirus crisis just as in the previous fiscal year. Although demand for learning foreign languages online continued from the previous fiscal year, demand for foreign language classes as a whole declined, because it became difficult for people to visit the class due to declarations of state of emergency and semi-state of emergency taken as COVID-19 measures and because people were unable to travel overseas or go abroad for business, which were often the motivations for learning different languages. In addition, market sizes of many other categories shrank from the COVID calamity.

Foreign Language Class Businesses Seem to Diversify the Services
Long-lasting COVID calamity has led the face-to-face classes to be plagued by hardship, but increasing numbers of businesses improved the user environment by adopting online lessons and providing self-learning apps. Many of language class operators intend to continue and even diversify these services.
The language business market size (total major 14 categories) for FY2022 has been estimated as 819.3 billion yen, up by 4.8% on a YoY basis.
Despite the continuous recovery trend in peripheral business market (categories of language exams, overseas-education arrangement, and interpretation/translation business categories) since previous fiscal year, the seventh wave remains as an anxious factor for the market of foreign language classes in FY2022, making the language business operators likely to keep on taking discreet measures against COVID. Still, as there are no current restrictions on behaviors, people are expected to be more active than the preceding fiscal year, which is projected for the language business market size (total of major 14 categories) to recover to the level of 800 billion yen.
