The language business market size (total major 14 categories) in FY2021 generated 782.0 billion yen, a rise by 1.2% on a YoY basis, based on the sales at businesses.

This upturn was because of recovery from significant shrinkage of “Peripheral Business” market that comprises the categories of language exams, overseas-education arrangement, and interpretation/translation business in the previous fiscal year.

This market continued being affected by coronavirus crisis just as in the previous fiscal year. Although demand for learning foreign languages online continued from the previous fiscal year, demand for foreign language classes as a whole declined, because it became difficult for people to visit the class due to declarations of state of emergency and semi-state of emergency taken as COVID-19 measures and because people were unable to travel overseas or go abroad for business, which were often the motivations for learning different languages.
