Contact Lens and Related Products Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2021
Contact Lens and Related Market in 2020 Significantly Diminished Due to Decreased Opportunities and Frequencies to Wear Contact Lenses in COVID-19 Calamity
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a research on the domestic market of contact lenses and related products (contact lens solutions, care systems, and eye drops.)
The estimated domestic market of contact lenses, contact lens solutions, care systems, and eye drops generated 271,100 million yen in 2020, based on the shipment values at manufacturers. Self-restraint to go outside and decreased opportunities to meet and contact with people in the COVID-19 calamity reduced the opportunities and frequencies to wear contact lenses, which considerably diminished the market by 8.1 percent from the previous year.
Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic to Contact Lens and Related Products Market
The entire contact lens and related products market in 2020 declined by 8.1 percent or 23,900 million yen from the previous year to 271,100 million yen. Because the market in the preceding year (2019) expanded to the maximum level of recent years, due to last-minute surge in demand just before the consumption tax hike, making it feel an enormous gap between 2019 and 2020.
For negative factors, the measures, including a declaration of state of emergency, taken to prevent infections from expanding caused stores to close or shorten their business hours, and drove people to work at home or kept from going outside, reducing the opportunities and frequencies of wearing contact lenses, all of which diminished the demand for contact lenses.
In 2021, the end of COVID-19 pandemic is still vague, but social activities are not likely to be ceased like in 2020, which can restore the market in the end. In addition, there have been some ingenuity and activities such as to respond to the customers who have difficulty in visiting stores, aiming not to excessively shrink the demands. Such improved measures are expected to be one of the solutions to support the market recovery.
