Survey Result Revealed 94.1% of Respondents “Implement Hygiene Control at Food Manufacturing Facilities and Distribution/Sales Channels, and Train Employees Thoroughly on Food Safety”
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the food inspection/analysis service market in Japan, and found out the safety measures and challenges at food-related businesses, together with the trends at leading domestic market players.
This press release covers results from the survey responded by food manufacturers, food processors of agricultural products/ animal products/ marine products, restaurants/diners, ready-to-eat (delicatessen) food processor, and meal service providers regarding their food safety measures.
Summary of Research Findings
In this research, the questionnaire was carried out from January to February 2021 to find out the attempts at food-related businesses, the users of food inspection/analysis services and food testing kits. The questions asked about their food safety measures, status of various food inspections, status of contract services, use status of rapid test kits, influence of COVID-19, challenges, and requests for food inspection/analysis services and testing kits.
The questionnaire was responded by a total of 101 companies and associations including major domestic food/beverage manufacturers, food processors of agricultural products/ animal products/ marine products, restaurants, ready-to-eat food makers, and meal services. Out of all responses, “Implement hygiene control at food manufacturing facilities and distribution/sales channels, and train employees thoroughly on food safety” scored highest, 94.1%, followed by “Identify country of origin and procurement of raw materials, self-manufacturing by contract farming or operating own farm” (88.1%), and “Inspect raw materials and products (food)” (84.2%). Together with the impact of COVID-19 last year, the result showed increasing awareness of food safety and hygiene among food-related businesses.
Current Status of Food Analysis Services and Food Testing Kits Market
Regarding to the food analysis services, demand for nutrition component analysis hovers high since nutrition labelling became mandatory from April 2020. Moreover, as introduction of HACCP system is required by law from June 2021, workshop and seminar businesses related to HACCP introduction enjoys good sales. Also, against the background of HACCP requirement, interest toward food safety management systems and willingness to introduce HACCP is rising among SMEs; the situation has expanded businesses that support companies to obtain various certifications.
Although characteristics of a market economy differ by type, the food testing kits market is growing as well. While spread of COVID-19 from 2020 had negative impact on (sales of) many food testing kits, it increased demand for ATP (adenosine triphosphate) wipe test kits in sanitation industry as a means to control hygiene during COVID-19 calamity.
