17 Categories of Entire Logistics Industry in Japan: Key Research Findings 2021
17 Categories of Entire Logistics Market Size for FY2020 Estimated to Decline by 0.8% to 20.2 Trillion Yen
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a survey on the 17 categories of entire logistics market and found out the trends by logistics category, the trends of market players, and future perspectives.
The estimated total market size of 17 categories of logistics industry f0r FY2019 was 20,405 billion yen, 96.4% on a YoY basis. Encouraged by strong domestic demand, the logistics for industrial goods (materials for production), for import and export, and for consumer goods that support general livelihood were stably demanded. However, the market had already been affected by the trade friction between the U.S. and China which somewhat weakened the logistics for export (international demand), followed by spread of COVID-19 infections in the beginning of 2020, which reduced the demand for domestic logistics as a whole as well as the international logistics services including marine transportation and airfreight forwarding.
Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic and Labor Shortage in Logistics –Imperative for Reform toward 2024 Issue-
Until new coronaviruses broke out, the domestic economy had been strong and the logistics that had supported it had long faced labor shortage. The shortage of drivers in the logistic industry became apparent as a social issue, which had kept the labor expense to soar and had hindered the domestic economic growth. In such a status the entire distribution of goods was disturbed by COVID-19 pandemic, though the conditions of logistics differed by category (consigner). As a result, the issue of labor shortage was seemingly alleviated temporarily, but in fact, it has not been fundamentally solved.
The concern hereafter is the influence by the workstyle reform. Revised Labour Standards Act may further raise the driver fee, which is sure to raise the entire logistics expense by 2024. It is time for the whole society to review the logistics expenses.
For FY2020 the COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted a significant damage to the logistics industry mainly for exports (external demand). On the other hand, general consumers have started their new lifestyles and shifted their purchasing behaviors to use mail order services while they stayed home. This led to steadfast demand for the categories of home and store deliveries including last mile logistics and delivery. The estimated total market size of 17 categories of logistics industry f0r FY2020 is 20,237.5 billion yen, 99.2% on a YoY basis.
