Housing Equipment Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2020
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic housing equipment market and has found out the current market status, the trends of market players, and the future perspectives.
The major housing equipment market size (total shipment values of water section equipment, water-section related equipment, and energy saving/generating equipment at makers) for FY2019 estimated as 1,877,030 million yen, an increase by 1.8% from the previous fiscal year. All markets, i.e. water section equipment, water-section related equipment, and energy saving/generating equipment, have made an upward turn compared to the preceding fiscal year. The rise is due to the last-minute demand before tax hike in October 2019 (first half of the year), which exceeded the backlash in the latter half or drop in demand against the backdrop of spread of novel coronavirus.
Rise in Demand for Touchless Equipment due to COVID-19 Calamity
Spread of the novel coronavirus increased the demand for touchless equipment, and therefore the housing related businesses (including makers of housing equipment, house makers, and housing reform operators) are actively promoting “touchless tap”, a sensor-controlled tap that automatically turns on or off as it senses hands. Its advantage is not only for being hygienic, but also for reducing use of water compared to taps controlled manually by levers, as it can avoid water from left running.
Moreover, new equipment such as entrance door with remote controller has been introduced, which can be locked/unlocked without touching the door handle. As this is in line with the demand for contactless doors as a countermeasure to COVID-19 infections, further rise in demand is expected hereafter.
In addition, increase in demand for other touchless/contactless equipment using IoT technology is anticipated. Such products include smart key system using smartphones for automatic lockable apartment entrance/front door, and smart locker system designed to send and receive parcels without direct contact with delivery person.
The major housing equipment market size (total shipment values of water section equipment, water-section related equipment, and energy saving/generating equipment at makers) for FY2020 is estimated to attain 1,701,100 million yen, decrease by 9.4% from the previous fiscal year.
Market size is assumed to diminish in accordance to continuance of repercussions in consumer demand from the tax hike in the last fiscal year, decline in new residential construction (data source: the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport), and limitation in sales activities in general due to influence of the coronavirus infections, such as avoidance of customer visits, opening showrooms, and holding events.
