Size of the global drone market in 2018 including military demand and private demand (for industrial use/ for individual use [hobby]/ for services using drones) is estimated to attain 1,600,000 million yen, at a CAGR of 8.3% during 2020-2025 period. While increase in military drones stay at a CAGR of 4.1%, private drones (for industrial use/for individual use) is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.7%, and commercial services using drones at 15.5% likewise.

Overview and Perspectives of Commercial Drone Services by Segment

Global market of the commercial drone services is projected to grow at a CAGR of 15.5% between the years 2020 and 2025. In fact, the inspection and testing, the segment forecasted to grow at highest in the last survey conducted in 2016, are expected to exceed the 2016 outlook, as the demand increased by far for inspection in maintenance of social infrastructure and for assessing/monitoring the situation at the time of disaster. 

Of all the commercial services using drones, the highest-growth segment is the transportation and distribution services, expanding at a CAGR of 29.7% for 2020 to 2025. The high growth rate is primarily due to the current situation that no such services exist; however, it is also because of a background that in the major industrially advanced countries, the transportation and distribution services using drones are expected to be authorized hereafter. On the other hand, the least-growing segment is the measuring and mapping. While measuring in civil engineering by drones is already in practical use and the use of service is still rising, because of the limitations in the usage of high-precision measuring and 3D mapping, the growth is projected at a CAGR of 10.7% between the years 2020 and 2025.

Global Drone (UAV/UAS) Market

The drone market in this research includes unmanned aircraft as described later, UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) and RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems). “Drone” refers to an aircraft with autonomous control, i.e., hover at the spot when the signal is interrupted, or fly back to departure point upon determination of residual battery capacity. Here, UAV is defined as an aerial vehicle with automatic control (autonomy), at least capable of controlling its flight position for conducting tasks such as photography. Nonetheless, so-called radio-controlled aircraft that requires a piloting operator is excluded.

Drone is a common name for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). A whole system of UAV and its Ground Control Station (GCS) is called Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS).  The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) use UAS as an official term. In order to make a clear distinction from the complete autonomous aerial system, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) is used by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to refer to any aircrafts that is unmanned but guided remotely by human. Therefore, in Europe, drone is often referred to as RPAS.
