Flooring Materials Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2019
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic flooring materials market and has found out the market size, trend by segment, and future outlook.
The domestic flooring materials market size (total of nine categories: composite flooring, carpets, tatami-mats, synthetic-resin (vinyl) based flooring materials, free-access floors, dry type double-layer sound insulation floors, floor tiles, painted flooring materials, and floor heating systems for residence) for FY2018 was estimated as 406,480 million yen, a decline by 1.4% from the previous fiscal year. In recent years, the flooring materials market has remained around 400,000 million yen, as the market size in FY2017 slightly rose from the preceding fiscal year but turned to the worse in the following fiscal year. When observing the trend by category, the following six categories mainly used for residence (both detached houses and condos), i.e., composite flooring, carpets, tatami-mats, synthetic-resin (vinyl) based flooring materials, floor tiles, and residential floor heating systems, have continued being flat to decreasing tendency, because of a long-term declining trend in the number of new housing starts. The categories of free-access floors and painted flooring materials mainly for non-dwelling constructions such as office buildings, plants, commercial facilities, and medical care facilities, have continued staying flat with continual ups and downs every fiscal year due to lack of new application development, though they showed stable growth for plants and redevelopment projects in urban areas. On the other hand, dry type double-layer sound insulation floors which had conventionally been used mainly for condominiums have successfully expanded the demand for non-dwelling buildings such as that for replacing free-access floors.
Sales Promotions of Flooring Materials Shifting from Suggesting “Product” to “Space”
Each flooring materials maker has been shifting the promotions from suggesting “product” to “space.”
In often cases, some large-scale makers of composite flooring tend to be the major makers dealing in comprehensive wooden building materials. They have enhanced their total coordination abilities of a space to equip with integrated designed components including not only flooring materials but also kitchen, partitions, storage, sanitary spaces, etc. On the other hand, while flooring tiles are used extensively for entrance areas as well as for external and internal walls, the tile makers have increasingly started suggesting use of tiles for a whole detached house. In addition, application development of tiles has been diversified, not limited to the buildings regardless of dwelling or non-dwelling.
The domestic flooring materials market size for FY2019 is projected to decline by 1.6% to 400,150 million yen.
Although the demand for free-access floors, painted flooring materials, and dry type double-layer sound insulation floors slightly increases for plants as well as for redevelopment projects in urban areas, the demand for flooring materials for residence is likely to decrease, reducing the whole flooring materials market.
