Assistive Technology Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2019
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic Assistive technology market and has found out the trend by product category (9 items), the trend of market players, and future perspectives.
The domestic assistive technology market size (based on the shipment values at makers) in FY2017 grew by 2.7% to achieve 308,260 million yen, and the market size for FY2018 is projected to rise by 2.0% to attain 314,480 million yen. The influence of the revision of long-term care insurance system taking effect in FY2018 differs by item, but is likely to be limited, in general.
Despite a possibility of being somewhat affected by the revision of long-term care insurance system against the backdrop of diminishing of fiscal resources, the assistive technology market for the future is expected to be driven by increasing population of elderly. By FY2025 the market size is projected to attain 353,570 million yen, based on the shipment values at makers.
The makers of assistive technology (including welfare equipment and long-term care products) need to consider their future strategies over the increase of co-payment rate to 30% for the users with certain levels of income after the revision of long-term care insurance system taking effect in FY2018. Meanwhile, the upper limits being set for the leasing fee by each assistive technology item has started affecting the rental market of assistive technology in that it may cause classification of rental businesses.
Since the product releases by makers invigorate the entire assistive technology market, the makers are expected to develop some products such as dementia-supporting tools that can expect high demand, or to develop welfare equipment diverting to rehabilitation devices.
