Housing Equipment Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2019
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic housing equipment market and has found out the current market status, the trends of market players, and the future perspectives.
The major housing equipment market size (total shipment values of water section equipment, water-section related equipment, and energy saving/generating equipment at makers) for FY2018 estimated as 2,000,805 million yen, a decline by 2.0% from the previous fiscal year. All the equipment categories, (i.e., water section equipment, water-section related equipment, and energy saving/generating equipment) decreased from the previous fiscal year, and the largest decline of the three was seen in energy saving/generating equipment due to the end of the subsidy program for photovoltaic systems and decreased prices when selling electronics under FIT program.
Thriving Market Expected by Value-Added Services
The most expected for thriving market are smart home systems, i.e., housing equipment integrated into Connected Home or Smart Home. Such systems are connected with smartphones and internet to provide value-added services that can manage and adjust the residence from the outside such as safety/security services (including watch services to secure safety of the residents), remote controlling/ inner-operation of house appliances and devices, and save-energy services via energy management.
Currently, expansion of Connected Home or Smart Home is still limited, but as the value-added services continue being provided, they are highly likely to be widely accepted.
The major housing equipment market size (total shipment values of water section equipment, water-section related equipment, and energy saving/generating equipment at makers) for FY2021 is estimated to rise by 3.5% of that of FY2018 to reach 2,070,800 million yen. While the categories of water section equipment and water-section related equipment are expected to be about the same as FY2018, with the former decrease by 0.1% and the latter rise by 2.6%, energy saving/generating equipment is projected to expand by 11.7% from FY2018, because of increasing demand by the owners of home solar power generation systems to consume their own electricity generated after their FIT contracts end. Therefore, the category of energy saving/generating equipment is projected to be the driving force of the entire major housing equipment market.
