- FY2016 Hairdressing Market Declined to 2,157.5 Billion Yen, 99.6% on Y-o-Y Basis
The hairdressing market (based on the sales at the businesses) in FY2016 attained 2,157.5 billion yen, 99.6% of the size in the previous fiscal year. The barber market has been stagnant due to diminishing number of barbers, customers becoming older, lower frequency to visit, and increasing number of barber chains that provide low-price services. The beauty salon market has been polarized between those that are low-price salon chains and those that provide high-end services and techniques. The entire hairdressing market has maintained its size as almost the same as the previous fiscal year, because of enhancement in the sales of haircare cosmetics and those products categorized as beauty home electric appliances, as well as of some value-added services.
- Leading Salon Chains Responding to Diversified Customer Needs by Developing New Form of Business
There has been development of new form of business in progress in order to respond to diversifying customer demand mainly by those large salon chains that place importance on profitability and business stability. Particularly, there have been more cases of those companies that have conventionally operated those salons providing hair designs and techniques with middle-to-high prices, to shift to low-price salon chains.
- Increasing Number of Makers Attempting to Normalize Supply Structure by Preventing Non-Legitimate Supplies
There has been an issue of professional cosmetic products for beauty salons and barbers sold through illegal channels. This is causing individual stores and tiny salons to suffer from financial difficulties, which is forcing them to reduce expenses. To help improve the situation, the makers and dealers of the cosmetics for beauty salons and barbers have been making attempts to prevent illegal channels by tracing the records and strengthening surveillance of cyber security, aiming to protect the profits of the customers who bought the legitimate products and to secure trust of the companies.
