Cloud Computing in Japan: Key Research Findings 2011

--

Research Outline

Yano Research Institute has conducted a study on cloud computing market with the following conditions:
1.   Research period: From July to October, 2011
2.   Research targets: 452 organizations including domestic companies and public agencies
3.   Research methodologies: Mail-in questionnaire surveys

Summary of Research Findings

n       Rate of utilization for private cloud is still low at 3.8 %
It turned out in the survey regarding interests and utilization rate of private (or in-house) cloud service that only 3.8 % of respondents are actually using it. Those “considering using it” were 7.4 % and “somewhat interested (at a stage of collecting information)” marked 28.4 %. Therefore, total 39.6% were “interested” in private cloud computing.
n       Utilization rate for IaaS and PaaS also stayed low at 2.5%
As for IaaS and PaaS (cloud computing services provided by IT vendors) only 2.5% of respondents were using them. However, the research found out that 4.5 % were “considering using them” and 33.4 % “somewhat interested (at a stage of collecting information),” which led to 40.4 % of respondents “interested” in some ways in cloud computing services provided by IT vendors.
n       Over 10% of large companies are already using cloud; diffusion at mid-size and small companies may be a matter of hours
A slightly different view can be seen at some large companies when it comes to utilization ratio of cloud computing. It turned out that 14.8 % of those large companies, whose turnover exceed 100 billion yen, are already using private (or in-house) cloud computing services. Their utilization rate for IaaS and PaaS was 11.1%.
